The Effect of Listening to Music While Sleeping

Good naps are hard to come by, as many factors interfere with sleep, from work stress and family responsibilities to illness. Hence, people have come up with solutions—some either try to perform sleep meditation or modify their sleeping environment. At the same time, some people just listen to music and enter a restful zone at night. Yes, it may be surprising to hear this, but music has some impactful effects on sleep. In this blog, let us see how music is connected to sleep and what effects it can have on our sleep:

Music has the power to evoke profound feelings like happiness, sadness, love, hate, or even depression. Moreover, it can move people of all cultures and offers such rewarding experiences. Hence, it might not be wrong to say that music can dominate our brain, mind, and body. 

Do you know that the type of song you choose can alter the levels of hormones in your body? For example, if you try to hear a pleasant tune, your serotonin levels can rise and bring you into a good mood. Yet, we typically nod when we listen to music, right? This is because hearing music can activate our brain in several ways, such as:

  • It stimulates both the left and right sides of our brains. Keeping them engaged can boost your ability to solve problems.
  • It also activates the hippocampus, a region of the brain that is linked to memory storage. This is why listening to old songs can take us back in time and leave us with nostalgic moments.

With all the ways music affects your body, you can already clearly see how music can be an effective relaxation tool. Relaxation is what we need for better quality sleep. And there isn't a better option than music to unwind your mind. Some scientists hypothesize that listening to music with a BPM of 60 and 80 can induce relaxation and aid sleep (source).

As you may have experienced, numerous thoughts keep vying for your attention by the time you wind down for the day and go to bed. This may keep you up all night and make you grumpy the next day. But playing some pleasant background music helps you turn off your stressful thoughts and lets you have a sound sleep.

Even though using music to treat your sleep disorders is viable, sleeping with earbuds can be risky. Here's how
  • Your earplugs can block the circulation of blood flow, which can lead to dead tissues.
  • Wax produced by our ears constantly protects the ear canals. Nevertheless, excessive wax buildup can be harmful. As a result, our ears become clogged, and our hearing is impaired. Using earphones for a prolonged period can cause wax buildup. Clearly, this is not healthy.
  • If you wear wired headphones to bed, you might wake up with tangled chords. This might cause strangulation.

Music can be used as an effective treatment for both short-term and long-term sleep disorders. Yes, it can help if you don't bring the earbuds near your bed. However, as you have learned, many risks are associated with wearing earbuds while dozing off to sleep. This does not mean that you shouldn't use music as a sleep aid; you certainly can, but just be careful not to listen to it through earbuds. Many alternative solutions, like speakers, woofers, or wireless devices, can help you listen to music without jeopardizing your health or ability to sleep. Therefore, make use of such tools and enhance the quality of your sleep!
